MAN'S INHUMANITY
WE'RE 'MYTHing' SOMETHING?

In my new TIME magazine there is an article by Jeffrey Kluger titled Why we worry about the things we shouldn't and it highlighted a point that comes up quite often in this blog..

"Part of the problem we have with evaluating risk, scientists say, is that we're moving through this modern world with what is in many respects, a prehistoric brain."

"We think that we've grown accustomed to living in a predator free environment in which most of the dangers of the wild have been driven away or fenced off, but our central nervous system-evolving at a glacial pace-hasn't got the message."

As you know we are not living in a predator free environment.
We are our own worst enemy!
Humans are still killing other humans and the last century over 50 million of us were sytematically eliminated by our own countrymen.

So I was wondering...

You know how scientists are telling us that humans are exchanging DNA from all corners of the globe and that in a couple thousand years we will have a more uniform appearance..a nice deep taupe with what we now refer to as afro-asian highlights.

Do you suppose that once we have less physical distinctions that we might not kill each other as much?
There is only one species of human.
Why do we keep MYTHing this point?

I personally think that Religion is more divisive and it seems highly improbable that there could ever be peace on earth as long as these competing religions exist to divide us into us and thems.

So suppose that the religious elements finally killed each other off and sent each other to their respective great beyonds.
All that remains to repopulate the planet are a couple million similar looking human beings. Is it possible that they could overcome that prehistoric brain and work together..or are we completely and hopelessly lost to repeat the past?

Would the survivors find other ways to separate each other based on something equally ridiculous?

The 20th Century, the bloodiest in human history, was the Century of Genocidic Mass Murder.
More than 50 million people were executed for ethnic, political and religious excuses proved that. Here are some of the worst examples of man's inhumanity to man according to National Geographic:

CHINA 30M/ USSR 20M/ JAPAN 10 M/ GERMANY 11M/ PAKISTAN 3M/ CAMBODIA 1.7M/ AFGHANISTAN 1.8M/ NIGERIA 2M/ RWANDA 1M/ INDIA 1M/ INDONESIA 1.2M

Our record speaks for itself.
Is there anything aside from an extraterrestrial invasion (which I don't believe is remotely probable) that could unite our species?

Will we ever get the message that there is only ONE species of human?

WHOLLY CROW!
HELP! Over the last couple of days a Crow has been following me to and from my son's school..but only while I am alone..never when my son is with me.
Now I am not a superstitious guy but it is getting a little creepy.

I know that Crows and Ravens are very intelligent birds with strong linguistic skills and tool using abilities and that a group of crows is called a murder. I am also well aware of their prominence as harbingers of MISCHIEF, MISFORTUNE and DEATH in myth and the occult.

Because Crows and Ravens are big, black birds they have osmotically inherited all of the superstional mystique that surrounds it. Black absorbs all frequencies of light (electromagnetic energy) in the visible spectrum so it has come to be highly prized by Psychics... Black apparently has a metaphorical correlation to the abyss of infinite knowledge.

When I worked on a survey crew in Northern Manitoba in the 70s (I was a Rodman) the crew would sometimes drive through the garbage dump to look for fox or bears...but there were always huge numbers of Seagulls (air-rats) and Ravens. If you stuck a metal object (like a gun barrel) out of the truck the Gulls wouldn't notice, but the Ravens did.
Even if you poked something out a few inches, poof!..
the Ravens would vanish!
Honest. I'll never forget that.

As far as birds being a portent of Death I do have one eerie story..shortly after returning with us from a trip to Disneyland in the 60s my Grandmother awoke to see an Owl sitting on the window sill the night that my Grandfather died...I find it hard to forget that story either.

Ravens have appeared in folklore as far back as the 3rd Millenium BCE in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Chaldean Flood Myth that was the template for the story about Noah. In Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim releases a dove and a raven to see if there is any dry land..the dove circles and comes back..the raven never returns giving him his answer.

Now I do have a birthday coming up and maybe in the back of my mind....nah...perhaps this coincidental Crow has mistaken me for a neighbour who may have been feeding it.
Whatever the reason it is creeping me out when it hops along the garage a few feet from my head while it is squawking at me. Then it flys from tree to tree as I walk to and fro to my son's school ...but I never see it when my son is with me?
Does that mean anything?

Does anyone believe that this is some symbollic gesture from the great beyond regarding my future transition to an afterlife (of which I have serious doubts about btw) or is it simply a channeled message (hello I am an empiricist!) from Thoreau who said that Crows "represent the stark twilight and unsatisfied thoughts which all men have"
Is all of this Crow crazytalk just Poppycock?

What I do know is that I'll probably step out in front of a bus because I am too preoccupied watching this f*cking crow! As a rational empirical skeptic this is all very embarrassing but so help me if an Owl shows up on my window sill I am going to freak out!

What should I do?
Sincerely,
Donn CAWppens

but it is taking atleast 5 hours out of everyday to complete the 4Rs of blogging:
read, write, respond & reply
....I may need to reconsider.

I am getting frustrated because I am constantly behind other people's posts and I could be writing twice as many posts...but I feel that if I can't maintain a
reciprocal, symbiotic, relationship
with as many other bloggers as is possible, then I am defeating the purpose!

..and only in America would they invent a tip jar for bloggers..
imagine paying to read a blog?!

I am starting to feel

MR&MRS BONANAFANAFAUXNAME

While you waste your time trying to solve problems like world peace, people who are desperately in love all over the world are wrestling with real issues..like whether or not to change their last name when they get married!

The surname, sirename or supername, is a throwback to the patriarchal days when women were chattel.
Apparently the majority of Earthlings actually place their surname first (Mao Zedong) and if you must know the most common surnames on the planet are Lee,Wang, Chang, Liu and Chen.

As I have previously mentioned, ad nauseum, all verterbrates are created as females so logically males are therefore mutants.
I personally have no doubt in my mind that this old boys club tradition of brides adopting their husbands name will probably end in the not too distant future.

Here is a real Nee-slapper, my goodladywife retained her maiden name. Neither of my daughters have married... I do not know what they will do.
It was our second kick at the can and at the inception of our so-called starter marriages we had both adopted the traditional Y chromosone rule. It wasn't really a huge deal and certainly not nearly as difficult as naming our son.

After nearly 20 years of educating other people's kids my wife had her fill of all of the trendy decade names..that's another story...anyway WE decided to place her maiden name as one of his middle names and saddled him with my surname..not terribly creative.

Historically supernames were invented in accordance with a person's Occupation, Physical Characteristics, Geographical or Locational distinctions, Titles or your basic just for the hell of it Patronymics or Matronymics rules. In almost every culture the man's name prevailed.

With the ever increasing equalization of the genders many young couples now choose to blend their surnames to better reflect the creation of a brand new family, cool idea.
Jones + Smith becomes Smones or Jonith.

Others accommodate this conundrum by hyphenating the two, so called double barrel names, as in Jones-Smith. Not bad.
This is all fine and dandy until the issue of children enters the formula.
If the beautiful daughter of Mr & Mrs Jones-Smith married the dashing son of Mr & Mrs Schnikelheimer-Stankovikiouschuk
..well you can see what I mean.

I have always found it interesting how various traditions handled naming offspring...the son of Russian OV, Irish O', Polish SKI, Jewish BEN, Scandinavian SSON etcetera..and Daughters were alotted Dotters or Bas etc.

The ideal time for couples to decide this matter is while they are in the midst of surging hornymones which generously immerse the brain during the infatuation stage of their courtship.
Men and Women are biochemically infused with a powerful romantic cocktail for approximately 18 months...when love is blind.... NATURE's naughty little trick to get humans to procreate and pass on DNA.

According to f%$#@&g Divorce Lawyers, this hornymone stage is the best time for women to sign prenups and the worst time for men to sign anything as in MacCartney vs Mills...or vice versa as in K-Fed vs Britney!

Anyway I am interested to know if people
A. could care less
B. feel strongly about it
C. know exactly what to do

If you have a moment it would be nice if you could zip over downunda and wish STACE & AIDAN all the best on their big day tomorrow in Melbourne, Australia!
MUAH!

VICARIOUS VALIDITY
In our culture it is easy to gauge how old you are getting by monitoring the viability and stature of the celebrities that are the same age as you are.

I watched the Madonna special last night and thought to myself, ' Hey we're the same age...

You go girl.. Madonna, Madonna.'

Madonna is 48 and so am I, for a few more weeks...
yes my fellow pedantrists my Birthdate is Decembrrr 57..OK..do the math if you must?.

If on the other hand I thought that she was starting to look a little long in the tooth then I would have to adjust my settings... but for now, the Material Girl still has it goin' on therefore I feel as if I haven't reached the top of the hill and started rolling down the other side. I know that this sounds stupid, because it is, but in a society that is so obssessed with youth every little bit helps.

No matter how vapid this vanity seems I must confess that by simply vicariously hitchin' my wagon to Madonna's ass, it keeps me feeling youthful and viable.

Another equally famous person who WAS my age

Michael Jackson.

We don't have time to discuss his unique set of circumstances and between you and me I think that he has had a bit of work done so he isn't much help in some respects...
but he is the King of Pop and history will never forgive, I mean forget him.

Last but not least is a guy who was born in 1957 who really, no really, makes me feel young and carefree...
Osama Bin Laden.

I suppose if he shaved off his beard he would look a lot younger...it works for me though because he looks way older than I do.

Here for my enjoyment is a list of other celebs my age that you could care less about but I intend to monitor their progress to see how old I am getting...

ACTRESSES
Sharon Stone, Annette Bening, Madeline Stowe, Holly Hunter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rachel Ward, Andy McDowell, Jennifer Tilly

ACTORS
Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Bacon, Viggo Mortensen,Christopher Lambert, Tim Robbins and Spike Lee

MUSICIANS
Prince, Kate Bush, Simon Le Bon, Donny Osmond, Sid Vicious, Joan Jett, Neil Finn, Grandmaster Flash, Paul Weller, Sheila E and Belinda Carlisle

COMEDIANS
Ray Romano, Jon Lovitz, Denis Leary, Ellen DeGeneres, Bernie Mac, Megan Mullaly, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Dan Castellanta (DOH!)

I know that this is very unscientific and ridiculous but what are ya gonna do?
In closing I leave you with these timeless words of wisdom from Groucho Marx who once said,
"you are only as old as the woman you feel"
...not exactly PC but it does tie in nicely to my earlier comment about Madonna's ass!

Name the 3 MOST FAMOUS PEOPLE who just so happen to be the same age as you?

HOPE I DIE
BEFORE I GET REALLY REALLY REALLY OLD!

Did anyone else watch Frontline tonight?
Living Old was an examination into how our society is going to deal with caring for 70 Million people over the age of 65..
that's right over the next 30 years twenty per cent (1 in 5) of the population will be older adults.
The fastest growing segment of society is the 85+ crowd..we are about to become the first mass geriatric society.

Apparently unless you have 3 daughters or daughters in law to take care of you..
you won't be dying at home in your bed..
which is the fantasy death that everyone craves..
go to sleep and never wake up...
but most of us will die in a hospital.

Our system is not set up to handle this crisis and all of the Doctors who were featured in this show vowed to NEVER EVER let their lives deteriorate to these pathetic physical and mental levels of most of the 85+ patients..
the Doctors, like myself, all seemed intent on optting out if you know what I mean.

Up until maybe fifty years ago most people had the good sense and common decency to go when their time was up...before our modern invasive miracles. Now if a body cannot not sustain life they can artificailly preserve it and grant the family of the beloved the joy of waiting for a medical catastrophe to end their life.

Young people are afraid of not living forever and old people are afraid of living forever.

How about you?

Do you want to stay alive for as long as possible,
at any cost, no matter what condition your body is in?
If the 60s DIED in 1968,
THEN WHY IS 2008 LOOKING SO FAMILIAR?

Progress Schmogress!
The 60s era actually ended before the decade ended. The dream of a New Age by a monolithic Baby Boom Generation had vanished in 1968. The illusion of a real 'United' States was murdered with the man who seemed to be the last chance to deliver the Dream.

The youthful, utopian hope of the USA fixing their country and then the world, maybe even as one big happy family, died on June 6, 1968 when Bobby Kennedy was assassinated by a puny Palestinian man named Sirhan_Sirhan.

The other shoe had dropped.
I was a 10 year old Canadian kid but I remember that day.

For me this marquee moment has as much of an impact on our modern world as did Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, 9/11, Walking on the Moon in '69 and the assassinations of his brother Jack in 1963 and Martin Luther King in '68.
I was only 5 when the President was shot in Dallas.

By 1968 many of the first and most influential wave of the BABY BOOMERS, those born between 1946 and 1956, I was born in '57, were already deeply ensconced in the midst of a tumultuous period in American history.
The Civil Rights and Gender Equality movements, the War in Viet Nam, and the Generation Gap were in full swing when Bobby was assassinated in June of '68.

The assassinations of Bobby Kennedy, JFK in '63, and then Martin Luther King Jr. just a few months earlier on April 4th, 1968 (U2's Pride/In The Name Of Love) polarised the Boomers into the two separate directions that still strangles American politics. The Presidential election in 2008 is shaping up to be fought along the same lines with another unpopular and unwinnable War, this time in Iraq, at the forefront of the confrontation between these two camps.

Half of the Baby Boomers have become exactly what the other half feared most..old fashioned right wing squares, just like their parents.

For many Bobby was the embodiment of Hope. That is why I see his death as the straw that broke the camel's back. The day that the Dream died and gave rise to the bleak mixture of nihilism and hedonism that we associate with the bleak 70s and it's proverbial Me Generation...
as well as the subsequent opposing view of the Conservative Christian Yuppy Reagan era of the 80s.

After 1968, in order to cope with this violent, crazy,
self-destructing world, one side of the Boomers returned to Old Fashioned values, a conservative Republican view of God and Country and Law and Order in search of a more structured environment.

The other half tuned in to Woodstock, was turned off by the past, and turned on to fight for the the Dream.

Both Boomer camps then had a little time out and retreated briefly to suburbia and began raising families. This procreational phenomenon peaked in 1985 when almost 3.7 Million births were recorded..nearly identical to the 4 Million anuual births of the original Baby Boom!

Speaking of families, back in the 50s when the Boomers were growing up Spock said,

not that Spock!

the other one, Dr. Benjamin Spock, who told parents to how to raise children:remember 'Love them, Feed them and leave them alone.'
The old school method of raising little cyborgs was out and Dr. Spock became the scapegoat of the old school Gi/Great Generation, who were the parents of the Boomers, who had fought the War and saved the World, and felt that he was creating a generation, and many agree, that was hooked on
instant gratification!

Spock also was a vocal opponent of the Viet Nam War, Circumcision, and a strong advocate for gender equality..
Spock addressed children in his books in the feminine form she in equal measure ..the nerve eh? Where was I...

For me the assassination of Bobby appears to be a flashpoint, the final nail in the coffin, because after that any chance of a monolithic YOUTH MOVEMENT was dead!

The Boomers were divided and morphed into Hippys and or Yuppys and off they went to reorganise themselves and battle each other in the simmering Culture War that percolated during the Watergate years of the early 70s and exploded around 1980

The Baby Boomers of course had a whack of kids, half of which were raised in a pseudo Leave It To Beaver- 50s style- back to the future- Red State model and the other half in the more moderate- liberal- man in the mirror -Blue Democratic world.
Each with it's own positive and negative side effects.

Naturally I am excited to see the film Bobby
and see how they handled the killing of the Dream.
Bobby was written and directed by Emilio Estevez and is about the night that Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

The huge cast includes Emilio Estevez, Laurence Fishburne, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins,Helen Hunt,Joshua Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, James Marsden, Lindsey Lohan, William H Macy, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, Sharon Stone, Christian Slater, and Elijah Wood.

This movie follows a cross section of America who are at the hotel anticipating Kennedy’s arrival for the primary election night party. This historic night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country in 1968.

Is it just me or was Yogi Berra right?

"This is like deja vu all over again!"

beneath me

I am an iceberg,
glistening in the sun.
On the surface,
passing ships sojourn.

Beneath the waves,
my enormity is veiled.
Hard astern,
mind your frailty.

Through the swells,
a mountain swims.
This life uncertain,
frozen in time.

A glacial ghost,
adrift in splendor.
My shimmering disguise,
triumphant once more.

Farewell happenstance,
the horizon summons.
Dark secrets hidden,
shivering beneath me.

the Solipsist Soliloquist.

Thank You
for not thinking 'Oh f*ck HEs not attempting to pen another poem!' and racing off to find something more interesting, informative, exhorting, or comforting.
We are allowed to write about whatever and
Icebergs are cool.

My thought du jour is... people are like ICEBERGS.
Many of us only expose a small percentage, maybe 10%?,
of ourselves to others,
if you get my drift?

Only a handful of people are ever allowed to get below the surface to discover the REAL YOU..
therefore most of us never get to 'see enough' of other people to really understand them.
We prefer to stay in the boat and rarely jump overboard to get a good look.

Perhaps you float a little higher and like to expose more of yourself..say 50%...
Or maybe you are a Tigger type extrovert, shamelessly bobbing around with
80% of your MASS right out in the open Woo Hoo!

Do you eschew social intercourse with other humans in the real world but do a flip flop on the Blogosphere and bare your soul?

Maybe you enjoy telling people to 'BELOW ME!' on a regular basis.
If you do chances are that you enjoy being enigmatic and mysterious.
You put a lot of thought and effort into it...that's cool..whatever floats yer boat..

BUT do you act that way because you think that most people are just self absorbed unforgiving snoops who would be horrified if they knew what you were hiding?...

Other folks would obviously have a better understanding of what we are all about if they could see the whole picture? But at what cost?

How much of yourself do you expose on the blogosphere
compared to the real world?

THE TROJAN FACE
The reason that modern Humans, Homo Escapeons, are obssessed with FACIAL RECOGNITION must be due to the fact that our species is primarily a visual creature.

Evolution has programmed us to examine faces for clues and cues about
the other person's general health and reproductive prospects. A perfectly balanced arrangement of features will enhance the chances of our genes being advanced and outcompeting others in the struggle for survival.

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but this mask outlines the symmetrical, balanced beautiful/handsome face that is universally approved by virtually every culture on the planet.

Since vision is our primary sense, the others are embarrassingly weak when compared to most mammals, Humans rely heavily on visual signals from other Escapeons as the main method to determine their intentions.

We can usually tell if another person poses a threat or an opportunity *wink wink by the expression on their face.

If you want to learn more about this subject I suggest that you watch the series hosted by John Cleese; The_Human_Face.

21st Century Escapeons are bombard with hundreds of facial images every day. The various forms of Media transmit FACES in an attempt to win our approval, lower our guard, and let their message in. This psychological warfare is administered because for better or for worse, we learn to trust facial brands.

Advertisers cheat of course, they still need to airbrush and alter even beautiful people with perfectly proportioned features. At the same time they also use average looking people, sometimes even odd or perceptually plain looking people, to lower our guard.

Either way, they are consciously trying to manipulate our fight or flight responses in their favour and try to get us to buy something from their client.

Modern Newscasters must be handpicked from the test market results of focus groups. Now that News is just another division of some Conglomerate they exist to sell soap ads like any other division.

That's why we are no longer staring at grey haired, wizened, fatherly, figures like Walter Cronkite.

Even more painfully obvious is the fact that the Female Newscasters are not only beautiful, but dare I even say it, sexy!?

I agree with Sting, "
they all look like Game Show Hosts To Me."

There are over 6 Billion of us on Earth and most of us live in a country that has millions of people. How do advertisers cut through the clutter?
Face BRANDS.

There are plenty of internationally recognisable celebrities with unique face brands who are being marketed around the globe...to sell Movie Tickets or Cars or Beauty Aids or even Political Ideals. Many Western Celebs sneak off to do Ads in the Far East for huge sums of money...wouldn't you?

The recent Feylin phenomenon during the American Presidential Election was an excellent example of how powerful the Human Face is.

I believe that Sarah Palin's stock went up one million times thanks to the striking resemblence and deft impersonation of her by Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live.

This reminded me of the power of being a Look-A-Like.

Many actors got their first break in the business because they looked like an established actor. Since we had already accepted the facial brand of their predecessor they get a walk to third base. Remember how the Industry poked fun at this with their Looky-Loo scam in Ocean's 12 in which Julia Roberts pretended to look like Julia Roberts?

Have a look at these pretty women, Monica Potter and Julia Roberts.
.

Elias Koteas (rhymes with Coat-tails) got his break in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

He certainly reminded me of a young de Niro..btw I think that Elias is an excellent actor.

Born on third base Actors may become fine actors in their own right, but they undoudtedly received their big break because of their accidental resemblence to the prototypical Leading Man ..have a lash at exhibit A:
Paul Newman,
Mathew McRoll-in-the-hay &
Becks.

Pitt and Redford..is this mere coinky-dink?

Hello!
Look at Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, Rock Hudson and their modern equivalent George Clooney.

Actors like Clooney and Pitt may get their foot in the door thanks to their looks but it usually becomes a handicap because they get pigeon-holed in the Leading Man category which does not usually translate into a nomination for the Oscar in the Best Actor category.
They usually need to take on a roll that downplays or thoroughly disguises their natural appearance. They have to pay a performance penance.

It's a Catch 22.0

Remember when Forrest Gump said,
"Handsome is,
as Handsome duh-uz"?

Even though we seem to have a love/hate relationship with handsome/beautiful it is a powerful primal force. What beautiful/handsome does best these days is make us buy and believe..and not necessarily in that order.

Whether it's political ideals or movie tickets, a face of either sex can still launch a thousand ships just like Helen of Troy. A symmetrical face with all the right ingredients gets you in the door.

Apparently there is a thriving subculture for Look-A-Likes for hire who in theory will add a little pizzazz to your corporate events. Your employees can have their picture taken, after a few, stiff, glasses of liquid personality, with a STAR and they can somehow absorb some of their cache by osmosis?

Look at this company...

You'll notice that some Celebrities are easier to mimic than others. Easy cheats include costumes, unique hairstyles or facial hair...and if the impersonator can copy the voice and mannerisms of their subject then the transformation takes on a life of it's own and our suspension of disbelief is engaged.

That being said our brains can instantly pick out frauds because we can detect minute variations.
It's easy to do Michael Jackson with shades and a white glove..even some of the Johnny Depps with his Pirate moustache are passable, but a bona fide doppleganger, dead-ringer, head shot, requires a miracle of random genetic chance or plastic surgery.

The odds of having similar looking individuals seems more probable if you consider that we all have a Genetic Eve. Part of each and every one of us is a copy of a copy of a copy that started 140,00 years ago.
One bright spot on the map of the Human Face is that there is more intermingling of people with varying degrees of melanin and hue thanks to eons of physical adaptations that were environmentally and latitudinally induced.

If you can possibly manage the time, have a peek at the Look-A-Likes...
there aren't really any dead-ringers, but close-enoughs seem to be good-enough?
It's not easy to stand out in a crowd of 6 Billion so apparently, some of us are willing to take what we can get..especially after a dozen drinks at one of those impossibly, tedious, staff functions.

What do you think?
