tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock...
"Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice."

Many of you are familiar with this famous poem by Robert Frost (1874–1963).

"So you think you got it all figured out
You're an expert in the field, without a doubt
But I know your methods inside and out
And I won't be takin' in by Fire and Ice
You come on like a flame

Then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and Ice
I wanna give you my love
But you'll just take a little piece of my heart"
Pat Benatar couldn't decide either!

I was thinking that the scariest scenario would be that it will never end.
What if things never change and we keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over and over and over?

However it WILL come to an end!
Scientists predict that the Sun has 5 to 7 billion years of energy left.

According to a synopsis on Wiki;
"Earth's biosphere will be destroyed before then by the Sun's steady increase in brightness as its hydrogen supply dwindles, its core contracts, and it becomes a Red Giant that engulfs us.

The extra solar energy input will evaporate Earth's oceans ultimately leaving Earth as a dessicated, dead planet with a surface of molten rock."

So be of good cheer because we have a few billion years left to smarten up.

Can we do it?

  2. I spotted a book the other day about how all our well-intentioned efforts to save the planet are doing the exact opposite. most depressing :(

  3. We won't have to wait for the sun to do us in. We are well on the way to f**king up the planet all on our own, what with habitat destruction and the extinction rate of species.

Not to mention our seemingly inalienable 'right' to annihilate each other through violent means - just waiting for someone to start popping off atomic bombs somewhere and put us into a nuclear winter a tad sooner than the sun drying us up.

  4. i have always felt that our believing that we have any real hand in the outcome of the world as we know it is ludicrus,, and speaks ever so loudly about mankind's superior self image... i do believe we should be kinder to the planet,, but to think i have a hand in the earths eventual outcome... uhm... no...i am not that powerful...

    very thought provoking post donn.....

  5. Oh, and I forgot about the climate change bit! We are speeding up global warming (a naturally occuring phenomenom) so as the polar ice melts, it will slow down the ocean currents that drive the wind currents, which govern the weather, so we will put ourselves into a deep freeze sooner rather than later. Then there will be no crops, so no food, so we all starve while freezing our kiesters off!

Got all that on a tv show last weekend - very interesting!!!

    I seriously doubt it.

Most people are out for themselves and don't give a rats ass about fixing anything.

We're gonna need a lot of sunscreen before we figure it out...

  10. Hell, I'll be long gone by then.
(I'm practicing to go undercover at the Republican Convention. Sound convincing? I think so.)

  11. The real question is not so much can we get our act together before time is up, but wether or not we actually get OFF this rock and out into the cosmos, ala Star Trek. If not, well, that's REALLY it.

But, truthfully, the worst thing that COULD happen to the cosmos would be us escaping this planet. We could spread the "Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny" out there just as easily as we did down here. Then we cross paths with spiders who don't get it and we meet our end anyway.

Either way we only last so long.

  13. nope. at this rate we're screwed in the next 50 years unless god shows up to vacuum.

  15. If I recall correctly, which I may not, the sun will consume or destroy the earth in about 4 billion years. So there's not much point in smartening up; no matter what we do, we're doomed. :)

  16. would ya be so kind as ta pass me another beer.............. I have a few drinks ta consume before I answer.......

Are we really the only ones who care?

  17. We won't last that long, I'm afraid.
Some people are doing that work faster and better than it will take the sun to become a Red Giant. Efficiency, they say. :(

  18. Last night I dreamed I made you cross-dress in a red corset.

You were a good sport and played along.

Just thought I'd share that with you.

Why don't they just put a SHAH back in power and get it over with? Have you seen Redford's movie Lions for Lambs?

There was a nice bit in their where Tom Cruise plays a young rising Republican Senator...he tells the reporter that the US will do whatever it takes..implying that they would consider taking the toys off of the high shelf that they haven't used since 1945...I wouldn't be surprised.

    LLEWTRAH
What is the title of said book? As a species we have never solved a single problem that we have caused to the environment..we seem to thrive on it. We've even managed to contaminate fish that live in the middle of the ocean..and those are the ones that we haven't even decimated yet.

    PONYGIRL
It's coming...I can't see how we can avoid it...and they'll make it look as if the other guy started it..like that matters?

as to your second thought..You know the chaos theory line about a butterfly flapping it's wings and starting a typhoon on the other side of the world?
Not a bad metaphor for how connected everything actually is down here.

    PAISLEY
We manufactured our predominant belief systems to legitimize our domination over nature..afterall it was just created for us right?
Since 99% of all living species have already become extinct I would think that it is fairly safe to say that we will too...but deny it right until the last person does his best Charlton Heston Planet Of The Apes scream YOU MANIACS!

Believe it or not I click on the font section where it reads LARGE.
Are you having a little font envy?
It's not the SIZE of the font, it's how you use it.

There is no better time to roll out the F-Bomb than on a Monday f*cking morning. Let 'er rip!

    CATSCRATCH DIVA
Despite all of our accomplishments we are still those greedy little monkeys trying to carry all of the bananas even if they keep falling out of our arms..we want to have it all...and it's not like they have somewhere to store bananas..they just don't want the other monkey to have them.

    RANDOM CHICK
You'll need an SPF 9 Zillion to protect your skin from the Sun when it expands to the edge of our stratosphere...and that will only last for about one nano second..but hey our summers are so short that you need to make the most of them.

    FIRST NATIONS
HA! Oh they won't be able to spot you..they have sniffer dogs and trick questions at the entrance that you'd never make it past..but if you did..you would froth at the mouth and burst into flames when you started listening to their vitriolic bullsh*t...
    cracker-lackin' they ain't!

Only the uber wealthy will be able to escape to Outer Space..however they will need servants..cooks, cleaners, whores, valets, but gardeners and chaufeurs?..
    not so much.

    JONAS
I fear that you are correct. Even though we have only had a few hundred years to consider that we are actually a natural byproduct of evolution the other 150,000 years spent in our present form has been fairly consistent...steal, kill, and destroy our neighbours..
    stick with what you know.

    GHOSTAY
50 years is optimistic but I can live with that...aslong as I'm safely gone by the time the sh*t really hits the fan..no my kids will still be around..make it one hundred and you have yourself a deal!

    CAZZIE
It is nice to just concentrate on our micro-world..otherwise we go insane..unfortunately there are all of these arseholes out there who are trying to reduce the whole place to cinders come hell or highwater...we need a way to deal with them and like it or not, we seem to get the weirdest people volunteering for those positions.

Ah yes 4 Billion Schmillion! Hey don't you want to do your part and have a decent biography on Wikipedia before you exit?
    Come on admit it.

    WHITESNAKE
You may be on to something. Ordinary people, by that I mean NON-Bloggers are stuck reading the papers and watching the news. They don't have a way to deal with problems head-on like we do.
    Poor bastards.

    Pass me a Beer.

    LENI
Unfortunately you are correctomundo! There are insufferable twats working day and night at finding a way to get the whole place on fire...and most of them think that they have an escape clause that will reward them in heaven!
They can all go to hell.

    MJ
    Hello!
    Moi cross-dressing in a Red corset..never happen!
    Purple or Blue, maybe?

    PONYGIRL
Please don't encourage MJ..she is tenacious and once she sets her mind on something it's practically a done deal because she just won't let it go.

  24. Donn, tell you what - you wear the blue and I'll wear the purple. MJ can wear the red. Maybe we could form a new geo-political party where to be a member you have to wear a corset. Just think of all the ... um... 'interesting' folks who'd want to join!!

Alright..you're right..of course..you can't worry about things that you don't have any control over..like LIFE!

    CITIZEN MONDO
You're lucky that you still get to worry about the next FIFTY years..I am down to 27.5...which could be worse and I might defy the actuarial charts out of pure spite and live to be 78 or 79 just to stick it to the man!

    ANNA
What a coinky-dink, I wanted to 'do' Pat Benatar too!
