FOR HEAVENS SAKE
I don't believe in Heaven anymore but I still love the idea of it.
It's comforting to think that there's a 'perfect' place for the dearly departed.
I wouldn't mind being completely wrong about it..afterall I would be reunited with my Dad, my brother Jamie, My Grandparents, and far too many Friends and Pets...quit snickering I might squeak past the Pearly Gates!

As far as metaphors go, Heaven is a beauty. The eternal, redemptive, reward for living a decent life. The worries of this world washed away. Peace Out.

I also love the idea of Hell as a final destination of eternal torment for all of the monstrously twisted, psychotic, assholes who do such a great job of making Life a "Living" Hell for the rest of us...that would be too good to be true.

Anyway back to the metaphor thingamabob. I was curious to see how many songs that I had in my Music Library that used Heaven as a reference. I suppose that the generic version(s) of Heaven has been commercially Hallmark'd and Kitschified into something less regal than our predecessors had imagined it, but what are ya gonna do?

Anyway here is my list..

BeBop Deluxe: Maid In Heaven
Bee Gees: Too Much Heaven
Belinda Carlisle: Heaven
Bob Dylan/ Eric Clapton/ Guns N Roses:
Knockin’ On
Heaven’s Door
The Cure/Taking Back Sunday: Just Like Heaven
The Fray: Heaven Forbid
Fall Out Boy: Seven Minutes In Heaven
Gorillaz: Don’t Get Lost In Heaven
K-OS: Heaven Only Knows
Lacuna Coil: Heaven’s A Lie
Led Zeppelin/Jimmy Page/Techno Trance:
Stairway To
Heaven
Phil Collins: Something Happened On The Way To Heaven
The Pixies: This Monkey Gone To Heaven
Psychedelic Furs: Heaven
REM: Near Wild Heaven
The Tea Party: Heaven Coming Down
Tears For Fears: Closest Thing To Heaven
Toad The Wet Sprocket: Little Heaven

Do you know of any others?
(PP..it's OK if you ixnay the obvious Classical, Gangsta Crap, and 80s Christian Pop stuff ..no really)

You forgot Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.

    Tears In Heaven
by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings

    Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
    Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

    I must be strong
    And carry on,
    'Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven.

    Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
    Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

    I'll find my way
    Through night and day,
    'Cause I know I just can't stay
    Here in heaven.

    Time can bring you down,
    Time can bend your knees.
    Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

    Beyond the door,
    There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
    Tears in heaven.

    Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
    Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

    I must be strong
    And carry on,
    'Cause I know I don't belong
    Here in heaven.

  19. Something a little more obscure: Joe Jackson's 10 year old experimental album "Heaven & Hell" where each piece of music (it would be insulting to call them mere *songs* :) is devoted to one of the seven deadly sins. I first heard this music live, almost exactly 10 years ago, at the Vogue Theatre on Granville Street and was totally blown away by it. It's still one of my favourite albums but not for mainstream taste.

Will The Roses Bloom In Heaven?
Words and Music by Chas. K. Harris.
Published 1911 by Chas. K. Harris.

    [Verse 1]
In a cold and cheerless garret,
In a room so dim so lone,
    Mid the frosty wint'ry silence,
There is heard a little moan.

And a little child is asking,
    At the break of day,
Will the roses bloom in Heaven,
Tell me mother, teel me pray.

    [Chorus]
Will the roses bloom in Heaven,
    Are there any gardens there?
    Any violets and clover,
Way up with the Angels fair?

Will the branches fill with blossoms,
And in winter fill with snow?
Will the roses bloom in Heaven?
Tell me Mamma, ere I go.

    [Verse 2]
Now the room grows light and lighter,
Ev'ry thing has caught a glow.
Heaven seems to stretch about her,
And dream faces come and go.

Then she whispers birds are singing,
    Songs of melody,
And I see the roses blooming,
    While the Angels beckon me.

    [Chorus]

Johnny Cash: **You're the nearest thing to Heaven**

Connie Smith: **Jesus is your ticket to heaven**

    [Verse 1]
    I hold your little photograph

    I sit and wonder
    'bout you little dear!
    You're just as near perfection
    as most anyone could be,
My dream girl, Won't you tell me:

    [Chorus]
Are you from Heaven? My glad heart sings,
Are you an angel? Where are your wings?
Who were you sent for? Who were you meant for?
I'll tell you, I'll tell you, For me alone!

  35. I hope there is a heaven, because some people I look after deserve a better place to go to when they die...better than the way they have to live with their illnesses anyway. And, I ope I have helped them be comfortable, as much as possible anyway...before they do indeed go..hopefully, to heaven.
