WELCOME TO PORT MANTEAU

It's another day in Paradise..
HOT and SUNNY with a nice breeze whispering off of the Ocean.

Stroll out to the end of the pier... have a seat and order your favorite drink. Aaaahhh!
OK clear your head and forget about tomorrow....

What we like do out here is to create, share and discuss Portmanteau ...
which is a fancy schmancy term for a word like
smog, woman (womb man), cyborg, motel or brunch, that

fuses two or more words or parts of words to give a combined meaning.

Although many of us try to protect our beloved English I am reminded that it snuck its way to the top by being a whore and a bandit. English did not even exist when Julius Caesar landed in Britain 2,000 years ago but today English (Englishes) has become the first global language.

Out here in the Blogosphere the English Language is morphing again so we might as well get in on it.

OMG how that Teenager Text Messaging Lingo drives me crazy but WTF can I do to stop it? I mean aside from never using it... ROFLMAO!

So I have decided to stop kvetching and thought that we should chillax,

enjoy the scenery, the company and have some fun with it.

I would also encourage you to submit your brilliant portmanteaux to the urbandictionary.com to entertain millions, and attain the wealth, fame and prestige that you so richly deserve!

So, let's hear it..name a P'orman's d'oh or txtmsg that you LOVE, HATE, or CREATED.

A suitcase is what I think of.

But then I'm old and very, very strange.

  3. Brilliant, off the wall, fascinating!!! OK, I better come down to earth, you're going to get a fatter head than you've already got.

Just stoppin' in quick like for a gander (never even got a chance to comment on your komodo post).

But I guess anyone likely to read your post is a living portmanteau. Bloggers: Web loggers.

Great idea! Can I start with "pruniac" which is what I called a friend the other night when she admitted to being unable to stop clipping before she decimated her shrubs.
Of course, that glorious beach with the "Cocos manitobi" waving its hula fronds is bound to stir the creative juices. To think...last week it was 40 below! I'm impressed

you don't NEED to know this, but...in Australia all children carry their school books, lunches etc in a "port." Going on holiday? You "pack your port." In NZ (at least til mid 50s)people from the far south were recognisable by their use of "portmanteau" for "suitcase."
Gee! I bet you're glad I told you that!

I'm with Laura Elizabeth. I always thought portmanteau meant a suitcase. Didn't know it had other meanings.

As for txt msg shortcuts, I admit I was stumped when i first encountered these: gr8t for great and l8t for late.

HE, you know what I think? I think the people who despise txt msg talk are people who don't use text messages.

Because anyone who does send them on a regular basis will understand the amount of time saved by abbrev. words. It just really makes a lot of sense.

What I won't defend is the obvious lack of punctuation used in said text messages. It is getting worse by the day.

I hate "IC", it sounds so cold and snippy.

Some pretty eclectic stuff there, HE. Wonder if there's any
    connection with the political
    appointmenteaus we see down here?

  11. ghosty,
The Queen's Englisce is all but dead and nothing can reverse it...there are still plenty of other Englishes to choose from so help yourself.

    laura e,
You are neither and this will be a very common response..somethings just get stuck...the very name is a testament to the French Kings ruling over England for centuries.

    windy windbag,
Please come back when you have more time to spare..whenever that may be.

    dinahmow,
Pruniac is great. There are a lot of nuts here but none of them begin with Coco...last night it was zero and I wore a sweater outside and then within about three hours it dove to minus 20 something..weird weather...I was waiting for that.

    mj,
I would love to hear your explanation of snog...

    menchie,
I understand why txtmsgs are brief but I don't think that it needs to spread to the blogosphere...what's the rush??

    anblgr,
Well part of the problem is because those little f*cking keyboards are designed to accomodate squirrel monkey hands!! If this keeps up our written languages..
and only one ot two will survive... will be back to glyphs and symbols!

    THE michael,
    It is because: everythinghastobedonerightnowwedon'thaveasecondtospareforsomereason.

    elgrumbolero,
Well done old sport! I know that this is irreversible but maybe, just maybe, we can have one last period of full paragraphs before I pass on...wht do u thnk?

  13. I always use full words and proper punctuation in all my text messages. The recipients must hate me for that.

  14. willy wankerbean,
You didn't really have any discernable remark about my post so I shall just take the high road and leave you with the standard Whateverpeg line that we insert when a conservation grinds to an embarrassing halt..
    "So what about them Jets?"

    Anna,
Well done..there should be some sort of award for preserving the integrity of civilised communication.
    A+
